how does an xray texturepack work

an unexperienced user here answering the question:
how does an x ray texture pack work?
It seems to be the case that the see through block all use a specific block
model. in the xray ultimate pack at least, but I have not been able to edit 
the texture pack such that I can make the ores also invisible or make other 
blocks visible
